Ship Island is one of my absolute favorite places and it should be gorgeous in July! Sun, sand, the wonderful Gulf of Mexico, dolphins, pelicans, hermit crabs, and even a snack bar!
I like to bring some reading, a fun picnic lunch, a big floppy hat and a ton of sunscreen. I spend my time at the island swimming, napping under the umbrella, and walking the shore looking for shells. A perfect beach day!
The ferry to Ship Island leaves at 9 a.m. from Gulfport, Mississippi, just about an hour and a half from New Orleans. You can opt to stay all day and take the 5 p.m. ferry back to Gulfport (what I'll be doing) or take the 2:30 ferry back. There are umbrellas and chairs to rent (two chairs and an umbrella for $25) at the island, and the ferry cost is $29 per person.
The ferry ride takes about an hour (there's a snack bar, bathrooms and AC on the ferry) and the walk from one side of the island to the other is about 1/3 mile. Look up Ship Island Excursions online for more info.
We'll meet at Gulfport at 8:30 a.m. to catch the 9 a.m. ferry. Yay!! You don't need to make reservations but you can prepurchase your tickets if you like for peace of mind by going here: http://www.msshipisland.com/, Everyone makes their own arrangements and pays their own way. Feel free to make carpool arrangements with each other.
