Chilling about the Holidays: Avoiding "Holiday Porn"

Holiday decorations, traditions, activities. Depending on how you approach it, it can all be a little overwhelming, especially if you're susceptible to the enticement of "holiday porn". But it doesn't have to be that way!  Here's how to notice and avoid the trap of "holiday porn" and stay chill about the holidays! You know how you'll page through magazines, scroll through Pinterest, glance at a window display or even go to someone else's house and see holiday decorations that kind of make you swoon?  And you imagine yourself maybe, in some other plane or universe, doing something like that in your own space?  And then the reality hits of what you really do for the holidays.

Those picture-perfect images?  They're what I like to refer to as "holiday porn."  I use the word "porn" like people use it when they say "food porn".  In this case, "porn" involves images depicting something ultra-idealized - not necessarily very realistic - even if it might be possible to recreate what's in the image.  Ultimately, when you get right down to it, it's not what you want in "real life."

What's interesting is that one person's "holiday porn" is another person's "just right, very realistic" reality.  And that's fine! The trick is knowing the difference, and knowing what you really want.  Amazingly, you can go to your body to get the answers.  If the image or idea feels open and refreshing, fun and interesting, and you feel light and happy thinking about decorating that way or making that project, then go for it!  If it feels tense and overwhelming and your body feels like it's closing up and retreating, and you feel that tightness in your chest or jaw when you picture trying to accomplish whatever you see in the photo or the display, then it's probably not your best choice.

What if you look at a magazine image and love it, love it, love it, but know that in reality it's just not going to happen?  Look closely.  What speaks to you in the image?  What do you really love?  What's the feeling you get looking at the picture?  Turns out that what you really want is the feeling state.  Think about something realistic for you that will give you the feeling state you're looking for.  If you see a picture of an immaculately decorated Christmas tree in front of a roaring fire and it gives you a feeling of coziness, but you don't have a fireplace and your tree was decorated by your two-year old, or you live in graduate housing and don't have a tree and will be traveling over the holidays, or there's some other reason that the image isn't your reality, then consider what does make sense for you to get that feeling of coziness.  Hot chocolate at your favorite coffee shop with a friend?  Curling up with your three dogs under a blanket and listening to Christmas carols while you write letters to your far-flung family members?  There are lots of ways to feel cozy.  Find the one that works for you!

Here's a recent example of "holiday porn" and "holiday not so porn" for me.  Remember - it's going to be different for everyone.  Interestingly, both of these ideas are from Martha Stewart, everyone's favorite "holiday porn" queen!   The first one was pretty to look at but an "absolute no" for me.  It's not that complicated, but it's just not floating my boat, and the image to me is also stark, a little lonely - no people! - and way too perfect.  This gingerbread house isn't gonna get made by me any time soon.  To me, gingerbread houses should be full of candy and made by kids, like the real ones I see friends posting on Facebook.  Or if they make you crazy, they should be skipped altogether!

In an earlier issue of Martha's magazine, I saw these cute little peanut butter and chocolate acorns and thought, "I could do them!  That would be fun!"  And so while I was vacationing at the beach with friends over Thanksgiving, I did just that.  I don't think Martha was picturing me sitting on the floor in my hotel room, watching TV while I made the little acorns, but it worked great for me!

They came out so cute and we all had a great time devouring them!

Is it "holiday porn" or not?  Only you can decide.  Listen to yourself, notice how you feel, and choose holiday activities, decorations, and events that make you feel good, not ones that create a reality you're not even interested in!

And remember, your feelings are allowed to change.  Just because you used to love  decorating six trees and making a miniature winter wonderland in the front yard for the past seventeen years doesn't mean you have to do that this year.  Traditions are tricky - listen to yourself and decide what you really, really want.  Holidays are meant to be savored, not slogged through.

How about you?  How do you stay chill through the holidays and avoid "holiday porn"?  What do you love most about the holidays?  What's your favorite tradition?

WIGS and WIGS!

What do you get when you mix a group of smart amazing women in fabulous wigs , a great venue with scores of wines to sample, a bunch of magazines at the ready for vision boarding, a limo and a club playing exclusively 80s music?  You get WIGS and WIGS night! I'm not sure exactly when I dreamed up this night.  I imagined the whole thing in my head months ago. And then last week I manifested it in the flesh with a bunch of fantastic girlfriends.

In the land of coaching, WIGS are Wildly Improbable Goals - those ones you would love to achieve but they seem like almost too much to ask - like relocating to Italy, or hiking the Appalachian trail, or writing an Oscar-winning screenplay, or just whatever you want that you don't have yet and it seems like it might be kind of complicated to do it or get it.

One way to articulate your WIGS is to create a vision board - a bunch of words and images that represent your goal and the feeling state you'll have when you accomplish it.  And when I learned that these goals were called WIGS, I just imagined in my head a bunch of women in wigs working on vision boards of their WIGS and then going out 80s dancing - because part of the fun of making vision boards is to release attachment to the outcome, and what better way to do this than go out dancing to Madonna, Duran Duran, Talking Heads and Michael Jackson?  Oh, and did I mention the limo?

We started the evening at W.I.N.O - the Wine Institute of New Orleans.  I love this place because it's self-serve wine tasting - you use a card to sample tastes of wine in specially climate-controlled dispensers - it's like wine vending machines!

We chatted and ate and made our vision boards, then hopped in the limo, shared our goals, toasted with champagne and headed out to dance at One Eyed Jack's, where they have an excellent DJ and dancers and they screen 80s movies and videos all night long. And oh my goodness, did we dance!  What is it about music from the 1980s?

We had such a fabulous time- and I'll be doing WIGS and WIGS nights again, plus more cool, creative events to help us all live our wild and precious lives.  If you're a woman living in the New Orleans area and want to make sure you don't miss out on the fun, sign up here and I'll put you on a special NOLA email list to keep you posted about upcoming exciting, relaxing, rejuvenating and fabulous events I dream up! (And of course I will not share your email or do anything spammy.)

I love living my wild and precious life by taking beautiful walks in nature, and I also love living it by dancing the night away! What have you been doing lately to live your wild and precious life?

30 Day Challenge: Day 30 - Celebrate! And look forward...

Wow.  Thirty fabulous days of drawing, sitting in the grass, and taking care of the piles of paper.  And today, I began a drawing that's not finished so that I can continue it tomorrow.  Because I plan to continue these soul-filling habits! And tomorrow I'll begin with a new challenge - an hour per day of completely unplugged focused work toward a major project, and morning positive writing to begin the day.  It's time to kick it up a notch, as New Orleans chef  Emeril Lagasse says!  Bam!

Thanks to everyone who commented, emailed me, joined in, supported me, and generally made me feel fabulous.  And here's to continuing to feed our souls and improve our lives, one day at a time!

30 Day Challenge: Day 29 - ready to fly?

I'm fascinated reading my last few entries, because they all sound kinda the same.  I think it's because I've gone through the honeymoon phase, the hard phase, the tired phase, the struggling phase, the recovering from struggle phase, the keep going phase, and have finally fallen into the lovely routine phase so there's less to talk about - less to stress over.  I've already begun my new challenge, informally, because it feels like time. Today, I played with drawing a version of a before sunrise photo.

And the mail doesn't even sit around on a flat surface at all before it's dealt with!  No junk mail piles - straight to recycling!

And grass time is extra lovely when the cats are there, making strange kitty semaphore shapes with their bodies.  Looking at Buster so very relaxed that he appears to have melted into the ground is definitely good for my soul!

So here I am.  Day 29. In a routine.  Ready to fly - and to head on to a new challenge on Wednesday!

30 Day Challenge: Day 28 - closing in, looking forward

This is what makes it worth it - to get this far and see that it has made a difference - that things are better - that I have found time to draw!  Not having time is such a lie.  It's just about what we want to make sure we have time for; it's what we prioritize. Today I drew at one of my favorite places - a beautiful creek in Mississippi.  The weather was perfect for lazing on the sandy beach or drifting in the tea-colored water, while tiny fish nibbled on my ankles.

Looking forward, I plan to keep my current 30 day habits in place - they are part of what makes a difference to me in living my wild and precious life!  And I'm going to start another challenge.  I plan to: 1. Write in my journal every morning with great positivity and inspiration.  (I've already actually started this!) Writing is a great way to start the day, and over the past 30 days I have been writing something most days, but my plan is to be really intentional about positive writing that sets me up for a fantastic day.  I love doing this and it absolutely makes a difference for me!  2. Spend one dedicated hour each day (ideally in the morning!) working on specific projects, with all distractions like FB, blogging, email, etc. completely disconnected.  I've done some of this, but I haven't been super-intentional about it, and it's time for focused working to rise to the top of my list.  I'm excited about my new challenges and even better, I'm feeling peaceful and confident that I can keep up with my current ones.  I won't be blogging about my challenges anymore every day (it's a little time consuming!) but I'll keep you posted with a check in here and there, and I would LOVE to hear about your challenges!
